Black redhorse romp

On the way home from the roundup I decided to take a whole day to play around. Normally we rush back but this time I had nearly 7 hours to spend in MN.
I decided to try for Black redhorse again. Many years ago I managed to catch one and decided to see if my luck could be repeated.
As soon as I arrived I realized the fish were in full spawn. The goldens held in the deeper water set up on redds and the shallow riffles held black redhorse. Large numbers of black redhorse. The males had a notible dark stripe and a velvety coloration. It was very easy to spot the black redhorse next to the goldens. It was an amazing sight.
I started fishing for some blacks that were holding in slightly deeper water (2ft) They did not seem interested. I decided then to try a trick I learned from a freind. I set up a small orange bead above my hook. We used this rig in the carolinas to catch Notchlips who were being a tad stubborn.
As soon as I cast out with the new rig I had immedate interest. Moments later I had my second Black redhorse of my life in hand. A few photos and I sent her on her way.

Shortly after a friend arrived. I set up in the shade and managed to find another pod of resting blacks. Soon I had my third black in hand.

I decided to move down and let my friend have a crack at this pod.
While down river I spotted a few fish milling about on a gravel edge. As soon as I drifted the bead rig down I saw the two fish rush forward to grab the worm. Number four!

At this point I see my friend walking a fish back to the bank. His first Black redhorse! Such a joy to be there for moments like that.
I managed one more Black redhorse shortly after. Making a total of five in my life and four in one day.

It was an amazing day that couldnt have gone any better.

From the looks of it you have

From the looks of it you have been having an incredible spring with redhorse in general. Nice job. I've only got into those Blacks once when they were spawning and visable to sight fish like that. Other than that its just been a random fish here and there from that area. But no matter how you do there its still one of my favorite spots to hit. Lots of variety there.

Excellent stuff, congrats to

Excellent stuff, congrats to both of you. Trying that orange bead was a breakthrough. Now the question is will that work later in the summer, but that's besides the point. Very smart to target them when you did. Beautiful fish!
