For a group of fish that generally gets no love in sportfishing circles, this is literally the Corvette of catfish! With its dorsal and pectoral streamers highlighting a very streamlined form, and its slate gray coloration, this is one of the most beautiful members of this huge and cosmopolitan family.  This lovely (but wounded in it's right eye!) gafftopsail catfish (Bagre marinus) nailed a fingerling mullet set on a flounder rig, while being trolled behind my kayak in Double Bayou (Neches-Trinity Coastal Basin) at its confluence with Trinity Bay, in Chambers County, Texas.

Dimensions: 19.5 inches in length, 2.5 lbs in weight. Fight Quality: doubled up my new Ugly Stik Big Water/Marathon Guardian spinning combo with 50lb monofilament and kept it there for a good while I hung on and slowly worked it in. I was shocked that a fish of that size could muster that kind of resistance - but then again, that's a saltwater fish!
