The Tropical Gar is very similar to the Shortnose Gar.  It sports regular patterned spots on the sides and a thick, beefy body.  tropical gar are found from Southern Mexico through Northern Costa Rica, and may have been introduced as exotics in other areas as well.  A typical gar, it feeds on fish.
