The altamaha bass is a split off of the redeye bass complex, this one from the Altamaha river basin in Georgia. More specifically, this species can be found in the Oconee, Ogeechee, and Ocmulgee river basins above the fall line. Altamaha bass are in danger of being eliminated due to the introduction of non-native black bass species into their limited range which compete and hybridize with the native altamaha bass. Though they have not been properly described by science yet, they have been given the scientific name of Micropterus altamahae here to reflect the pattern given to the other redeye basses.
