The Lowland Cichlid is a popular aquarium species native to Mexico. It has been reported from California, Florida, Louisiana, and Nevada. Lowland Cichlids are closely related to the Texas Cichlid, Herichthys cyanoguttatus, which has also been introduced outside of its native range. The Lowland Cichlid can be differentiated by its slight underbite, larger spots, and black ventral coloring extending to the mouth on breeding individuals.
