    Snubnose Darter, Etheostoma simoterum

Snubnose darters are popular with anglers who have a permit to carry a concealed darter, as the short barrel makes them easier to hide on their person. But snubnose darters don't have nearly the range, accuracy, or stopping power provided by a full-size darter. You shouldn't really rely on a snubnose darter for protection in a real emergency. I like to keep a small-frame snubnose darter in an ankle holster as a backup, just in case my main service darter suffers a malfunction or jam.
