Pirate perch, Aphredoderus sayanus

This interesting and extremely secretive fish is found in swampy, murky, thickly vegetated waters throughout the eastern US. It is a small, stubby, dark brown or blackish fish with a single dorsal fin. It has 2 or 3 sharp spines on the dorsal and anal fin. The anus of an adult pirate perch is located on its throat, between the gills. When born, a baby pirate perch's anus is located in the normal position in front of its anal fin, but as it grows up the fish's anus migrates all the way up its belly and into the throat area. Little is known about this fish's life history, but it is thought to fertililze its eggs inside the gill cavity, and thereafter spit its eggs through its mouth into a specially constructed nest. The forward location of the urogenital opening allows eggs and sperm to be sucked into the fish's mouth through its gills.
