Konrad Schmidt MN DNR Paddlefish Photo Polyodon spathula

The paddlefish is an ancient, sharklike fish with a long, paddle-shaped snout.  It feeds exclusively on plankton by filtering them out of the water with its giant mouth agape.  Because of this, it's nearly impossible to catch paddlefish by angling.  In some areas, snagging seasons for paddlefish allow a sustainable harvest of this fast-growing species.
