Beast! What'd you catch him on? I always see big schools of them in the clear shallows in the main lake around our beach this time of year, but they always get spooked off by whatever I present them.
I like to fish for them in the pre-spawn, when, like carp, they're more aggressive. Well, aggressive for quillbacks, anyway. Carp are feeding on minnows that time of year and will hit small spoons.
Quillbacks do the same, but rarely. I find that letting a tiny, shiny spoon just sit on the bottom, then lightly hopping it up works fairly well. It will either scare the bejesus out of them, or you'll get a reaction strike. They like small Mr. Twisters, too.
Never really know what a quillback might be into on a given day. Saw a video on youtube one time of a guy hammering them on a walleye-size jig/swimbait combo.

beautiful quill
they're not that predatory, though... if you cast your left nut at 'em, you'd most likely scare 'em off
P.E.T.A. sucks!!! Plants are living things, too -- they're just easier to catch!
