The 2020 RUSFC: a look back
Now all that the entries have been made, and the final totals tallied, here's my take on this year's contest... 1. The Name Change - KUDOS! Finally, this Texas angler doesn't have to explain to potentially interested folks why a "Spring" contest is held in June! 2. Roundfish Roundup - great starter challenge! 3. Grocery store Bait - what a LOT of FUN! 4. Fishing up the Food Chain - tough, but I liked how this one forced you to incorporate micros into the mix. If you do this next year, you may want to take the food chain a step further DOWN, making us dig up or raise our own micro bait. 5. Roughfish Bingo - undoubtedly my least favorite. How to improve it and make it a little less daunting for us recreational guys while keeping it challenging for the hard bitten amongst us? Post the card(s) at the beginning of the contest. Have this challenge be an overarching, season-long (not just week-long) facet, replacing the default portion. Also, you could develop a series of card options based on different parts of the continent and the world that contestants could then choose from (no transferring between cards). Hopefully, as the pandemic eases, everyone will be able to travel again next summer, so the angler nomads in the group (me included!) can then actually complete multiple cards within the 10- week time frame. I'll create a Texas version if you would like. 6. Cleanup. - perfect. Loved it! 7. Untested Waters - great challenge, and thank you for opening it up to micros. The 3 mile radius was a major style cramper, but I imagine that will be eased up once the pandemic is up? 8. Catch 22 - Again, thanks for the micro clause! A lot of species to catch, but doable. 9. Homemade Lures- a great bonding experience for the family! A LOT of FUN! 10. Handlining- I am looking forward to wowing everyone with this one sometime in the future - this is the preferred method of fishing in my wife's native Brazil. We were SUPPOSED to have been doing the contest from there this year, before COVID hit. 11. Lunker Quest - a great way to wrap it all up. So that's all I have. Except to say thank you for putting this on, and you have our vote for continuing in this format. Now to get things ready for a camping trip to the beach - with that 60-mile radius in place, the Gulf of Mexico was off limits to us for the purposes of the Challenge. My son has shark fever, so... Tight lines everyone! Lepomis
