Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Silver Carp, Jumping Carp, Flying Carp, Asian Carp

The silver carp is a filter-feeding exotic from Asia.  A popular food fish in its home range, the silver carp is a despised invader in the United States, where it threatens to outcompete native fishes for food. Silver carp populations have exploded in recent years, with dense schools of them milling about and jumping below dams on the big southern rivers.

Tactics

The most effective way to hook silver is to drift an unweighted lure through the feeding schools. Serious asian carp anglers swear by bright-green jig bodies, but it probably doesn't matter. To up the odds, many anglers drift a series of these jig bodies, weighted at the bottom and attached to the main line by dropper loops (like a big sabiki rig). Usually, two hooks make up this rig, but in some cases three or even four can be used. Drifting a fly is also effective, especially where silver carp are feeding at or below the surface.
