HOOK: #12-18 Dry Fly Hook THREAD: Brown BODY: Olive Superfine RIB: Fine Silver Wire HACKLE: Ginger, palmered front to back WING: Elk Hair, clipped to shape
A venerable old standby, the elkhair caddis is one of the most deadly and versatile dry flies in the trouter's arsenal. It's visible, it floats, it bounces, it skates, and it drives trout wild. It's also a good indicator fly, and can be used for prospecting when no hatch is on. Also a decent hopper or stonefly imitation if tied large. Try fishing it with some action. A one-inch upstream skate can cause an otherwise reluctant trout to inhale this pattern with gusto. A sloppy cast which causes the fly to impact the surface of the water, hard, is the best way to draw attention to it, as trout key in on unsuccessful caddis divers. Also works for mooneyes, panfish, and other surface-feeding fish. Tied by Corey Geving
