The Highfin Carpsucker is the smallest of the carpsuckers, rarely reaching one pound in weight. It is also the least common carpsucker in our area, being more common in the south. Also known as the "Skimback" or "Grain Belt Grayling", the highfin has the curious habit of "Skimming", or swimming along with the pointed quill on it's top fin sticking out of the water. Look for Highfins in river backwaters and concentrated below dams in the spring.
