MNBowfinangler meets old Spadeface

MNBowfinangler canoed the wild and remote regions of the Chippewa River to add the mysterious shovelnose sturgeon to his lifelist. Congratulations on the great catch Josh! Click "Read More" below to read his full trip report. My wife and I had an amazing time out on the Chippewa River this past weekend. We planned this trip to be our celebration of our 6 month wedding anniversary. We put in just down from Carryville at around 8 a.m. Saturday morning. It was chilly and the fishing was slow until around mid day. The first fish of the trip was a silver redhorse I caught in a swift run. Then I got a mooneye and Joy got a nice silver redhorse in an eddy further downstream. We pulled over to fish from shore and stretch our legs and found an historical marker about the ghost town Tyrone. Now owned by Excel Energy, it was a proposed site for a nuclear power plant that was never built. The plaque said to follow a short trail up the hill to see the remnants of the old logging village. We went up there and found a bizarre field of charred grass. Scattered piles of sticks were still burning, but none of the trees or saplings in the area looked to have any fire damage. There were also tire tracks zigzagging through the area in strange ways. It was eerie enough the way we found it, but we found bones and a deer skull scattered around, along with this snake: We stopped at another sand bar later for lunch and caught a mix of shortheads and silvers. We had hot dogs and dug into our wedding cake for dessert to celebrate an awesome 6 months together. We set up on camp downstream from the Red Cedar River confluence and I rigged up a couple of rods to fish the deep, fast current. I landed my first shovelnose sturgeon here, a fish that I've been wanting bad for a while. I caught another in the morning as we were making breakfast, and Joy pulled in a couple nice channel catfish. We had Huevos Rancheros on torilla shells for breakfast to bring back memories of our honeymoon in Mexico. The last fish of the trip, right before we left camp: We floated the rest of the river to Durand without fishing, because I had to be to work by 5 yesterday. It was a beautiful day to be out, but we got sunburned pretty bad. Thank you so much TonyS for the route, it all worked out perfectly and it really is a great stretch of water!!!
