The Blue Sucker was almost extirpated in our area, thanks to the channelization and damming of the Mississippi watershed. Small numbers of this once-abundant gamefish have managed to survive in the main stem of the Mississippi and other large rivers. Streamlined, sickle-finned, and large, Blue Suckers are without a doubt a worthy target for anglers. If you happen to catch one, be sure to release it immediately (after a quick photo) - and send me a picture of it! This is a unique species whose habitat is severely limited. If you want to catch one, try the fast water in large river systems. Blue suckers may be found in the lower Mississippi watershed, generally in the riffly areas created by gravel bars or wingdams. Blue suckers are big fish - they can easily top ten pounds and a few up to 20 pounds have been taken in years past. Medium-weight spinning tackle or an 8-weight flyrod would be the tackle of choice. I imagine they would hit nymphs like the hare's ear. I also imagine they would jump a lot and get you acquainted with your backing.
