Rules are a little bit different this year, so be sure to read them. Registration: You must post a message with your name and location in the appropriate forum, and you must own a contest button. Buttons will be made available before the contest, but you can't start fishing until the contest begins even if you receive your button early. Duration: The contest will start on June 1st at 12:01 AM and end on June30th at the stroke of midnight. At midnight, the forum will be locked and no more entries will be accepted. Scoring: For each species of fish caught, you get ONE POINT. Format: A clear picture of the fish, including the contest button, must be posted in the contest forum for each species caught. Pictures including the angler are preferred, but not required. You must include the name of the species in the subject line, and nothing else. Common names are fine, but Latin names may be included for clarity. Repeat Winners: There will be no penalty for repeat winners. Everyone agrees that they want to win against the best. Prizes: The top three anglers will get a prize, purchased with the contest proceeds, which includes donations, excess money from button sales, and T-shirt sales. The first prize will be the custom fishing rod built for the contest by your humble webmaster, signed and numbered and inscribed with the winner's name. Top three winners will get super-cool champion icons in the forum for 1 year and an electronic Award for their user profile. There will be an additional drawing, with other prizes (at least three). The drawing is open to anyone who registers at least ten species of fish. Both drawings will be conducted by a neutral, uninterested party. Qualifying Species: All species must have the potential to reach 1 pound in weight, as always, because the judges cannot be relied upon to accurately identify tens of thousands of possible characin species from around the world. The master list of North American species can be found under FAQs. Species from outside North America must include a reference link which can be used to confirm the identity of the fish, preferably to a FishBase entry. Hybrids: Unlike in past contests where hybrids counted for nothing, hybrids will now count as ONE of the parent species IF it can be positively identified as a hybrid. Only if BOTH the parent species are caught, will the hybrid be disqualified. For example, a hybrid striper (white bass/striped bass hybrid) can count as a striper OR a white bass. Strains, Subspecies, and Color Morphs: These do not count as a separate species. Rulebreaking: Anyone caught breaking the rules may be disqualified at the judges' discretion. Judges: The judges include the site admins (Andy and Corey), Konrad Schmidt (MN DNR Ichthyologist), and other experts as needed. The webmaster corresponds with a number of ichthyologists whose services can be relied upon if necessary. Methods: Only hook-and-line angling is allowed. Fish must be hooked in the mouth. This represents the official rule list. It may be amended before the contest starts, so be sure-to re-read them again once the contest is underway to check for updates. |
