2008 roughfish.com Root River RoundupUPDATE - APRIL 25I spoke to Joyce at Eagle Cliff today; there should be plenty of room for us. I requested the same place we had last year, with the campsites by the sand bar as a backup. Not sure which spot they will give us, so just check in at the office and they'll point you in the right direction. Anyone planning on floating Friday the 9th should plan to arrive by noon. Tabitha and I will likely head down there Tuesday or Wednesday, so feel free to come early if you can swing it.If anyone feels strongly about one spot over another, now is the time to speak up. I like the sites by the canoe landing for several reasons: 1. good fishing there, even in high water 2. Closer to all the amenities of the campground, especially bathrooms with showers and flush toilets (right, ladies?) 3. Better overall river access 4. plenty of space, as it's adjacent to the overflow space, which was utilized last year. 5. Easy to load and unload your boats at the canoe landing. Pipe up, but as unofficial organizer and likely first arrival, I may trump you. ONE MORE THING - they have a new rule this year that prohibits out-of-state firewood being brought in. Look, their wood is usually well-seasoned and cheap. I like supporting the campground when possible, so just plan to buy it there, and save yourself the trouble. GENERAL INFORMATIONMay 9-11, 2008Eagle Cliffs Campground near Lanesboro, MN Friday paddle on the Root - Last year E. Subvaria and his Dad paddled a leaky old canoe, while Corey and I were sporting fishing kayaks. We paddled Eagle Cliff to Peterson, about 12 River miles or more. Got into some big Silvers on ultralight tackle, and were nearly barnstormed by a low-flying Turkey (which JK has indicated is a good sign that hippos are not close by, since these creatures do not like one another). I expect a bigger turnout for this year's paddle, and will attempt to bring additional boats if the demand is there. Rentals and shuttles are also available. Saturday's fishing contest - The high point of the weekend, an intense, "catch all the species you can in 2 hours" event. Corey is like a whirling dervish racing from angler to angler to verify species and size, with a fun prize for the winner (though the honor far outweighs any trinket or apparrel). Trout fishing on local streams - KPE, JK and Brian Stewart like to lead trout expeditions throughout the weekend, which usually result in a huge feast Saturday night. In fact, the meals we all eat collectively are legendary. Expect a big breakfast at some point, and probably a brat or burger grill Friday night. Musical Tents - Eagle Cliff has very strict grass policies, and Ivan always comes by to make sure we are relocating tents at regular intervals. Be prepared. Just plain fishing - at any time 24/7 there will be anglers near camp on the river catching whatever is biting. New species always capture the attention of the group. It's a non-stop fishing party. |
