The Redhorses belong to the sucker family. They are one of the largest and most common groups of suckers in North America. They are characterized by their shiny scales and red or orange fins. The redhorses are excellent game fish - tough fighters and eager biters. Native to North America and found nowhere else, they thrive in clean rivers east of the Rocky Mountains. Since many of the redhorse species look similar, identification can be difficult. Often, several species of redhorse will coexist in the same stream. To become proficient in identifying redhorses, you need to first narrow it down to the types of redhorse in your fishing area, and then learn to seperate them. The pages below provide some key characteristics of the more common species.
