Midge Larva makes up a large percentage the diet of many different species. This is, of course, a great fly for stream trout. I have fooled many sizable Browns by trailing this pattern behind a larger nymph. It is an excellent White Sucker pattern, perhaps the best, and will produce fine catches when dead-drifted through a pod of suckers in a deep, slow run. This is also one pattern that I use for ice-fishing. Panfish, trout and Ciscos really eat it up. Stomach contents from Ciscos I have caught from deep mid-lake mud flats show large amounts of midge larva, so now I always show them this fly under a dropper spoon. |
