Although no eels were caught, other species made for a entertaining night on the river
A bad day eeling.............. Posted on September 14, 2007
A bad day eel fishing is still better than a good day Walleye fishing. I met dR. Flathead and Roughfisher4life down on a narrow point on the lower St. Croix River tonight. The river channel narrows here, and we were hoping eels could be found. We caught no eels unfortunately, but it was time well spent as we landed a few other species.

The Doc had already landed a 40" plus sturgeon by the time I got there. After a few pesky drum, this Lake Sturgeon took Roughfisher4life's dead shad. It leapt out in the river, and gave him a good photo for his lifelist. A few nice 4-6 pond Channels were caught by the Doc, and I caught only more pesky drum. We were hoping for eels after dark.

After swithching form Shad to a gob of crawlers, I landed this little Lake Sturgeon. It snagged me up in some rocks near shore and I thought I had lost it, but after much yanking and pulling I got the fish free.

Then Dr. Flathead got a run on his rod baited with crawlers. He set the hook, and it was obvious that this was no mere drum. The fish tore off on some blistering runs and did not want to leave the bottom of the river. This fish fought him hard on his spinning tackle, and we were thinking 50"+ Sturgeon. The battle was great, but eventually the fish showed itself to be a giant Flathead......the biggest I have ever seen caught. What a fish! It was huge, and really lokked like a giant toad. The scale put it at 35 pounds! This was our last fish of the night, and what a way to end a trip........

Well, I'm off to the north woods to hunt some Ruffed Gouse and Squirrels this weekend. Maybe catch a Pike or two as well.............. ~Andrew Geving, Roughfisher-at-Large
