Realizing the importance of slimy and mottled sculpins in virtually all river systems to the predator species living there, we have spent considerable time observing them. Thier tendency to inhabit fast riffles and the cleanest of waters makes them the perfect prey for large trout. This pattern sinks like a rock and bounces enticingly over the bottom where you really need to be. A sculpin's belly never leaves the stream's bottom, so fishing deep is key. After dark fish this fly through deep pools or flats and get into the rythm of the night. If for no other reason, cast the Whistling Sculpin for the the sound it makes going through the air. The whistling just might call in fish, or bats, but always an experience will be had. Another twist to this pattern is its effectiveness for channel cats. No, you don't need to dip it in blood or cheese before casting, just fish it deep as if you were fishing smallies or drum....trust me, it's hard to have more fun with a flyrod.
