This species occurs only in the lakes and streams of western North America. The Mountain Whitefish is a streamlined, silvery fish with a brownish or grayish back. Unlike most of the other whitefishes, Mountain Whitefish are often found in flowing water. They feed mainly on insects. Flyfishing for Moutain Whitefish is great sport. They will key in on insect hatches like trout do, and be taken with standard trouting tactics.
