Shad identification

Anybody know the key identifiers between American shad and hickory shad? I do have pictures of my fish, but they're pretty useless for identification purposes. However, I can tell you that they averaged about twelve to fifteen inches long, ate a shiny plug like monstrosity called a gotcha plug, and are still living in the lights below the Route 50 Bridge in OCMD. I suspect that they were probably hickory shad because of the size and because I think I remember them having very tarpon like mouths.

Thanks for the help.

I know very little about shad, but here is a pretty good document about shad identification -
