The Mysterious Quillback Carpsucker

So, the quillback carpsucker is in my sights and I think it may just have me beat. There is so little information that I can find that it seems impossible to catch one of these little buggers. I know they are where I am fishing, as I see them often feeding along behind carp. I've tried float fishing during mid-day, which is when I've heard they are most active yet the river I am fishing on is very busy during the afternoon and the waves just roll on in. So, if there are any experienced quillback fishermen out there, tell me what I need to do! Any information towards my carpsucker stockpile will help!

Quillback

I assume you have already read this article?

Yes, this is the only bit of

Yes, this is the only bit of information I have found up to this point that has pointed me in the right direction for fishing quillbacks. I have come across no other relevant or useful information other than this article, but any other little flecks of information I can come across is what I am looking for. Thank you, Corey!

I am a hunter of many species. Not a very good hunter of many species, but a hunter nonetheless.

I catch them while targeting

I catch them while targeting Buffalo & Carp here in Ohio with grain based method mix.The only pattern that seems to catch them is single grains of sweet corn or fake pop-up corn in some of the fastest water.Though we do see them "kinda often" they seldom show in great numbers for us

Gary - Great stuff - do you mind if I copy your advice into the carpsucker article?

By "Method Fishing" you mean you have an inline cage-type method feeder on your line, loaded with a method mix, and with a hookbait on a leader below it, right?

I wonder if you hook them most often in faster water because the fish have a better chance of hooking themselves and signalling a bite in faster water, or if the method feeder is more effective at attracting them in faster water?

Gary - What type of rigs are

Gary - What type of rigs are you using and size of hook? What about hook link size/diameter?

I've been very curious about micro hair rigs or something with anti-ejection/blowback type qualities for quillback. I'm convinced that my latest capture managed to hook itself (registering the bite to my line) and that's the only reason that I caught it versus the hours spent unsuccesfully sightfishing and looking for a visual cue from the fish to indicate it had taken the bait.

now that I think about it, I

now that I think about it, I'm sure all of mine came out of fairly fast main downstream current -- never slack water or backcurrent

better bite detection & self-hooking probably plays a significant part... also, I think there's no need for super-stealth on the angler's part -- deeper, churning current does a good job hiding the movements & noise of an angler fairly far upstream from them

P.E.T.A. sucks!!! Plants are living things, too -- they're just easier to catch!

Anything I post on Roughfish

Anything I post on Roughfish is free to share with all-

I don't use cage style feeders in favor of just molding my method mix directly around a no-roll sinker above my rig but the technique is the same.

Method fishing is ultra effective for catching Suckers in current enviroment simply because it keeps them actively grazing around your hookbaits longer & draws Fish from afar.

Full disclosure: I fish with Fox electronic bite alarms so seldom miss subtile bites but it's all abouth the method mix .

Justin - I fish with bolt

Justin - I fish with bolt-rigs

small 10mm beads on hair rigded short 8-10 inch hook link (65# Power Pro braid)

#10 Mustad C67s caddis pattern hook - this is a 2xshort 3xstrong micro barb hook

my thoughts were that I wanted a hookbait that is small & heard enough that they will try to really chomp down as well as get a mouth full of hook
