I don't know if this is being discussed in other posts but the current system for posting pics is slow and inefficient. It took over an hour to post 7 pics. I'm not counting time towards editing them. First, I'm not a fan of selecting a species from a list. It takes time to scroll through the whole list of hundreds of names looking for the right one. We already have the species id list. Second, my pics wouldn't upload for some reason. I figured out it wouldn't accept them if they were over 50 kb. The minimum size stated is in the mb range so I don't understand that. Maybe there's another specification for files I'm not seeing.

Third, the life list style view of all your pics is not something I'm a fan of. I liked the regular forum post style of the previous contests because you could see what each person caught at what point in the contest. This way it seems more like a species journey... the fish get tougher and tougher as you go along.

I hope my opinion doesn't offend anyone. I really appreciate having a contest to compete in, it's the highlight of the year for me. I'm hoping things get tweaked a bit with the photo system. Also, what am I doing wrong that I have to reduce file size to get them posted?

Hope this helps!
It does take some getting used to, that is for sure. I had some difficulty initially uploading photos to the contest as well as lifelist sections. The problem I was having (and possibly the same for you?) is the physical dimensions of the photo. Most, if not all, digital cameras and cellphone cameras, take photos larger than 1024 pixels in a particular dimension. All I do is open the picture in Microsoft Paint, click Resize then Pixels, and enter 800 for the largest dimension. The secondary dimension should automatically resize accordingly. Then, save as fishname.jpg (or png, etc). And upload. Works everytime for me. The restrictions on size (both physical file size, and photo dimensions) is necessary to limit how much the server has to hold.
Here are the restrictions for the contest section, as listed on the contest page.
Files must be less than 24 MB.
Allowed file types: png gif jpg jpeg.
Images must be smaller than 1024x1024 pixels.
Hope this helps!
It doesn't matter what you're fishing for, just as long as you're out there doing it.
If it's bigger than 1024 it will automatically get resized down on the server.
You might be having a problem with the preview - you don't have to click "upload" to preview the image - just choose the image and click "Save" on the bottom of the page.
So far I have just been submitting contest entries right from my phone - no resizing or anything is necessary. Takes about 30 seconds to submit an entry, and I can do it right from the riverbank! Now this is pretty slick, but obviously the quality of a photo taken with a phone leaves something to be desired.
I've had issues where I've had to shrink my pictures and then I've had days where it was auto shrunk for me *shrugs*
I like things the way they are though.
I've been re-sizing to 1000 px - that way I avoid connect time outs and impatience, my connection here isn't blazing fast.
It's all been working smoothly for me.
If you're using a PC (and probably a Mac) you might want to try Picasa. Free software from google. It's a great way to keep your photos organized, but the best feature when it comes to things like species contest and lifelist entries is the simplicity of cropping and resizing photos.
When you crop or otherwise adjust a photo and then save it, Picasa saves the original and the altered one. That means you can undo everything an hour/day/month/year later.

Thanks a lot Corey, Andy and everyone else. That helps a lot. Should have realized you can just type the species name.. that's a big time saver. And not having to upload a photo is nice. Before when I tried to just save it gave me an error message. But now I see it works. Next I gotta try the automatic resize, that's pretty cool.
Superfrog - yep I resize pics the same way only with my camera's photo program. Works nice

One way that I got an error message was when I clicked save on my entry but hadn't clicked upload on the photo. I'd chosen the photo with the browse button, but forgot to click upload. Wrote whatever little info I wanted to add, clicked save and got an error. Could that be what was happening to you?
