- Description: Caught at a river in northeastern BC, Canada in July 2007. In the previous summer I caught my first ever Arctic grayling in the same area. I drove totally 26 hours in a long weekend just to catch this species, but it was worthy to do it. The pattern above the pectoral fin is like dark jewelries flowing a river for me.

- Description: My first ever bowfin caught at the Grand River mouth in August 2005. Bowfin also took long to catch although I had seen it in rivers many times. I traveled 200 miles once in a while to Windsor and fished day and night but I could never catch one. And I planned a trip to Bay of Quinte in Lake Ontario according to the info of Bowfin Anglers web page. But just before the trip I could catch my first ever bowfin in the fishing for longnose gar in the Grand River.

- Description: My first ever brook silverside caught in a creek of Lake Erie, Ontario in August 2005. When I was looking for the fish in the spot by swinging the brine shrimp on the hook in the air, I found that a few silverside were chasing the bait and when the bait came close to the surface they leaped to the bait. The action was much harder than when the bait was in the water. They thought that the bait was fly. So I started swinging the bait right above the water and after a few screw-ups finally a silverside hooked himself in the air! It was the most impressive fishing in Ontario.

- Description: Caught at a tributary of the Lake Ontario in December 2005. Owing to the effort of anglers who stock brown trout in this river I could enjoy catching brown trout every late fall. This fishing was the one that I learned bottom bouncing egg bag. Just bouncing the bottom with a noodle rod was fun for me regardless of the catch.

- Description: Caught at a river in the lower mainland BC in 2007 on marabou leech pattern. Bull trout used to be the same species of Dolly Varden but now they are separated species. Bull trout has bigger mouth and head than Dolly Varden. Bull trout once declined so much by mass killing to protect salmon resources but now they are conserved in BC. By the catch and release only regulation the number is increasing and we can enjoy good char fishing in local flows near Vancouver. Bull trout don't fight so acrobatically but because they are anadromous in rivers they grow big and give heavy fighting on light tackle.

But later I never did salmon fishing in Ontario because it was over crowded and it looked like fishing in a fishing pond. After moving to BC I resumed fishing for chinook but it is not so easy to catch chinook in a big river.

- Description: Caught at the Harrison River, BC in 2006. Chum salmon is the most popular salmon in Japan but in BC it's totally under utilized species. I like chum best among the pacific salmon because it fights most strongly compared to other salmon pound to pound, and other anglers are not around unless other popular salmon such as coho and sockeye are in the same spot. Chum salmon which freshly entered rivers are ready to bite spoons and flies. I most often use a fly under float rig with a bait casting tackle. This rig has an advantage of dead slowly twitching the fly at the same depth where salmon are staying.

- Description: Caught at a lake in the lower mainland BC in March 2006 using Marukyu Ecogear Grassminnow. 42 cm. Coastal cutthroat trout is anadromous in the Fraser River drainage. Fishing coastal cutthroat trout is not difficult and they are aggressive to take salmon roe, dew worm, lures and flies. But finding them is another thing because they are so migratory. One day catching the limit and next day being skunked in the same spot is not rare in this fishing.

But for the next two days I had no success in hooking any coho, which was my second purpose of the trip. On the last day I kept casting my Koho 45 from early moning till evening in a flat which was supposed to hold coho. And in the last hour before leaving I finally hooked this one and could land it safely with a great help of an angler from eastern Europe who was fishing near me.

- Description: My first ever kokanee caught at a lake in lower mainland BC in June 2006. It took me 9 challenges to catch my first ever kokanee. First I started with fully equipped trolling with flasher, attractors, wedding band and hoochie or worm. I went to remoted lakes which used to be famous for kokanee in BC but all lakes were no longer holding kokanee. Finally I realized that I could catch kokanee by just using the same tactics for rainbow trout after reading an article by Brian Chan that told me that kokanee stocked in shallow lakes change their feeding habit from plankton to chironomids and sometimes they rise on the surface. And I also found that a lake close to my place has self-reproducing population of kokanee. Jigging a pink crappie grub from the bottom to the surface is efficient way to come across a school of kokanee in relatively shallow lakes. I use a super ultralight tackle for jigging. Kokanee usually don't fight until it comes close to me but after that it gives spectacular fight on the super ultralight tackle. Straight deep diving and fully charged head shake after jumping 3 feet high! Landing a kokanee is always challenging with the barbless hook on their paper thin mouth.

That day, after the light shower in the river, schools of mooneye started the evening rise on mayfly here and there in front of me. I set my Japanese style fly rig with multiple droppers on my fishing pole. I waded near a school and cast my rig. After a couple of screw-ups in setting the hook by seeing the strike indicator moved, I set the hook by seeing a silvery fish body turned over near the fly before the indicator moved. It worked! Two mooneye were on my line but the top one got off the hook immediately. The bottom one became my memorial fish. Now I am using western style dry fly tackle for this river sprite.

- Description: My personal best 49 cm mountain whitefish caught at a river in the lower mainland BC in September 2006. Mountain whitefish is currently my favorite species because I can catch it year round and fishing it is not so easy as mentioned. They are so picky in their food. In a river they almost only take a special pattern of stonefly nymph fly, and in another river where salmon spawn they only take a single salmon egg of a particular manufacturer in the winter months as far as I tested. Also their mouth is quite small as well as fragile, making the hooking difficult. I use a small barbless hook for Japanese crusian carp for holding the single salmon egg because it is light, tough and doesn’t break the egg. I use an 18’ fishing pole for this rig and I think this is the best for naturally drifting the salmon egg. After the salmon eggs hatch, mountain whitefish change their feeding to salmon fry and they start to take a kind of crappie grub, but only a particular color. They fight crazy and shaking their heads in the fast current makes the angler worry that the hook may pop out of the paper thin mouth all the time. They don’t stop fighting till the last moment that I scoop it.

- Description: My first ever and personal best peamouth caught at the Fraser River, BC in April 2006. Peamouth grow to max 36 cm according to fishbase. Peamouth reminds me of Japanese dace (ugui, Tribolodon hakonensis) which looks quite similar to peamouth.

- Description: My first ever pink salmon caught at the Kitimat River in August 2007. In bigger rivers such as the Fraser River in BC, pink salmon are bigger and have higher and almost vertical cliff of their hump. It makes me laugh to look at such big humpy struggling in swimming a shallow riffle receiving a lot of water pressure on their hump.
