Lake Sturgeon Season 1 Year, 5 Months ago
|
|
|
Its only a few days away and I plan on hitting the Ole Croix to spend my day on the water chasing these prehistoric beasts.
Does anybody have any suggestions or reports to offer?

I will be heading out onto the Croix frequently and I fish bank side most of the season. I will most likely be heading out on Thursday night but any day of the weekend I'm pretty free. So for those of you interested in some company and who knows what they are doing (well kinda) Shoot me a PM and I'll see what I can do.

Early season tends to be a night bite on crawlers and if there is a good die off of shad then the shad bite takes over a little but crawlers still work and tend to be the go too bait. It is also nice to have a few live fatheads incase you need to try another bait, couple on a hook with one or two smashed gets the juices flowing.
If you plan to fish lake st croix fish 30-35 feet of water to start off and move every half hour if you do not get into them.

A couple years ago we had an awesome early season day bite, but last year the warmer weather/water seemed to really effect the early season. Anyone that's been on the Croix know if the river temps are dropping yet?
I hope to get out as much as I can this fall, but unfortunately I was an idiot. When I moved my hand surgery back I thought it would be perfect to get it done right after salmon season and before steelhead season...I am embarrassed to admit I forgot about sturgeon season!! I should have had it done during the high water season of July!
Anyway I hope to be at it the later part of September and into Oct. Might fish from shore at first until I know I can handle launching a boat. Once that occurs I usually can get weeknights free and would be happy to have some company out there. Anyone interested keep in touch and I'll let you know when I go out.
Also, to clarify, the harvest season goes until the end of Sept, but C&R season lasts until Oct 15th. So that gives you some more time to get here J Dunfee.

For more clarification (to those of us who have never targeted Sturgeon), what is the difference between soaking crawlers/cutbait for flathead and going for sturgeon specifically? In other words, if you are catting after Oct 15th, and catch a Sturgeon...then what?

@ESUB
Makes sense to me.
Is there a distinction in the technique/bait used for sturgeon vs cats? i.e. is there any reason the CO would say you are going for sturgeon outside season?

If you are using 80 pound power pro huge gear you might be questioned since channels do not need that gear.
Avid I am heading out in a couple hours. I will try to remember to shoot you a message with the details including the past few weeks of temp. I think it has dropped a little but not enough yet.

When we talk about the water temp dropping that is when we get the numbers and more of a day bite. I catch them all spring and summer long when I fish at night but not in numbers.
