I am not all that familiar with panfish.

Which is this?

Warmouth or Rock Bass?

How can you tell?

I'm not the expert around here but that looks like a fine rock bass to me.

Rock Bass fo sure.

The dark spots at the base of the scales and the head shape are a good indicator.

One sure way to tell however is to count the anal fin spines.
3 spines and its Cant be a rockbass
more then 3 and it can only be a rock bass.
At least in the WI and MN area

Flier, Roanoke Bass, Sacramento perch, Rockbass, White Crappie and Black Crappie all have more then 3 anal fin spines

Rock Bass for sure. I think Warmouths have a lighter tone, and I think some redness by the ear. Experts please!

Normally red on the ear, as for the lightness I have caught them completely black.

but yes the red ear is also one way, but the sure way is the anal fin spines
