My new dog... 6 Months, 2 Weeks ago
It all started with Jill and I deciding recently that our 1.5 year old black lab mix (adopted from Sandusky County Humane Society) needed a playmate. So I search petfinder and come across the story of a litter of dogs left in a box at the door of a Dog Warden's Office about an hour south of where I live. I ended up doing the drive, only to find out that 4 of the 6 had already been put down. The actual dog I saw on petfinder was there but in terrible shape. It had drainage from its eyes, uncontolled saliva pouring out its mouth, fur matted with crap and bugs in it... needless to say the dog is a mess. I asked the staff about it and they pretty much let me know it was going to be put down. It was already seperated in a tiny kennel on a far wall away from other dogs. I'm not exactly sure what I was thinking knowing the dog already had one foot or in this case, three paws in the grave, but I decided to adopt him. I think the folks there were rather surprised and must have reminded me 5 times there was a no return policy. So I pay $125 and put the dog in my car where he proceeds to pee, crap, puke, and drain all kinds of funk for the 1.5 hour drive to the vet. So the vet looks at him and says "you should drive back and at least ask for a trade"... he practically offered to call them to say they owed me a dog exchange - I honestly think he would have euthanized him for me at cost. I explain that I really want to give this dog an opportunity at life so he goes ahead and admits the dog to the site's animal hospital. I return the following day to receive a $390 bill for IV hydration, IV antibiotics, deworming, and all kinds of other stuff. He has been one expensive mutt but he is making remarkable progress. Only three more days and he will complete all of his medication - after that just like any other pup needing to wait for his next series of shots and his first heartworm pill. He was so sick that he really didn't act like a puppy at all - now he does play, run around, and wagged his tail a few times. He follows the other dog around and seems to enjoy her - still a bit cautious about people - including Jill and I. I'll keep everyone updated on the progress he is making.
