Welcome to the 2008 Species Contest Forum! 7 Months, 1 Week ago

How to enter
First, post a message in this forum. The subject should be your own username. The registration message should include a photo of yourself. You can write a little about yourself in the registration message if you like, and what part of the continent you're from. If you've competed in this contest before, you should mention your experience! Then, when the time comes, purchase a button. The buttons will be available for order on May 26, 2008. You will be able to buy them using the "Online Store" link to the left.

Rules and Procedures
Catch as many species of fish as possible between June 1 and June 30, 2008. Only identifiable species that reach one pound in weight will count. Photograph each fish in a way that makes it possible to identify the fish from the photograph. Ideally, the angler should also be in the photo, but if you're fishing alone, a ground shot is acceptable. The whole fish, and the contest button, MUST be visible in the photo. Then, post a reply to your original registration message, and include the photo. One reply per species. This contest is ANGLING-ONLY. No snagging, bowfishing, electrofishing, cast-netting, gaffing, noodling, dynamiting, rotenoning, seining, trawling, gunning, gillnetting, harpooning, grabbling, mudding, or other non-angling methods. Hook and line only. Hookless lures are acceptable. The list of acceptable species can be found under FAQs. Whoever gets the most species wins the grand prize. Judges can disqualify any entry on the basis of species identification, fair play, or photographs that make identification impossible. To help with identification, multiple photos can be included, but they must all be of the same fish. Please, only one species per reply, and each reply should contain a fish entry. Any posts that are not a species contest entry will be deleted or moved. There is a seperate forum for discussing the contest, use that one for commenting on catches.

Northern Snakehead will be added.

We've struggled with golden shiner for years - as a rule I'm hesitant to add the small cyprinids because of the "slippery slope" that would result from allowing them.

I'm going to open up a discussion about it on the main board.

What qualifies as a "unique species"?

Any other bonuses? Example for catching all of the redhorses?

Blackfin Cisco (Coregonus nigripinnis)
Deepwater Cisco (Coregonus johannae)
Fishbase seems to be saying they're extinct, and all the photos are of preserved specimens.
Do I get a bonus if I catch an extinct fish?

Outside the obvious joke...
If you catch a species believed to be extinct, I think there is better recognition than winning a website contest.. (no offense Gevings..)

You're right, those two are extinct. But who knows, there's a lot of water out there.

If you catch an extinct fish it counts double!
