What is the best rod n reel for river fishing? 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
|
|
|
I want to get a couple. I want to go for Catfish and sturgeon and anything else really in the main current of the river and would need something that could cast far, hold alot of line, cast weight, and hopefully handle decent sized fish plus any other things that might be helpful on the river. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks

I suspect you'll get a lot of different answers here...
If you're looking for a big fish setup, I strongly recommend the Abu Garcia 6500c3 reel on a 7' or 8' Ugly Stick. That's what I have, and I like it a lot. Plenty of line capacity, casting distance is good, and it's strong enough to horse in just about anything I'm likely to tangle with.
But, as I said, you'll probably get a lot of opinions. Sort of like asking which truck is best.

Yep what Channelcatben said. Or if you prefer spinning gear I would get a Cabela's salt striker in the 40 or 50 size with a 7 or 8 foot medium or medium heavy ugly stick.

Both of them have good suggestions!
I prefer a Glow stick by berkley for High visibility in the eve and dark. But I just picked up a Big Game rod from Wally world for $10.
If you find you enjoy that style of fishing you can get in deeper with a little more gear but to start get the stuff these guys suggested. Check Ebay for The Abu Garcia 6500.

I preferr a 7-9' spinning rod with strong backbone and a sensitive tip. This allows you to feel when the Cats are rubbing your bait and gives you enough time to get ready and set the hook. As for reels I prefer Diawa gear. Make sure you have good line capacity; but don't over do it or your reel will outsize your rod quickly. I've had good luck!

All the gear suggested so far is good for the fish you're targeting; however, if you want to get OWNED then get some light gear..muahahaha..j/k.

I've got the same and once I learned how to use the brake properly I was pretty happy with it. Haven't landed any fish on it yet tho..

Thanks for all the input. I finally settled on the Abu Garcia 6500c3 reel and a 7' Abu Garcia rod. Took it out today for a test spin and it casted great once I got the hang of it and I think it will work out well once I get it out on the river. Hopefully Ill be posting pics of a sturgeon and blue cat soon.

If you like that type of line keep using it!
I am a fan of Power Pro yellow Hi Vis 80 pound is what I use on all my larger bait casters.
The only person who has to like your selections is you! Congrats on your new purchase.
