I'll be there. I'll need to hop in a boat if I can't walk it.

Is there an address or something I can get to map directions?

Hey! It would be great to see you there. I can give you a ride in my boat, or Doc Flat could, or one of the other people.

Here's a brochure about the access point: http://service.govdelivery.com/docs/STPAUL/STPAUL_DeptParkRec/STPAUL_70/STPAUL_70_20010125_en.pdf

And a wikipedia article about the dam: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lock_and_Dam_No._1%2C_Mississippi_River

And a picture:

Hope this helps. Corey

OK, so I read the brochure, and I can't figure it out. I actually wouldn't be able to find the place by reading the brochure.

And I've been there twenty times.

So, the deal is, you take 35 south (or some other road) and get on 694, and you take Snelling South. Then you get onto Ford Parkway. OK, I'm going to stop right here, because my driving directions have, in the past, been so bad that they have actually killed people.

Ask somebody else about how to get there.

Everybody else: Please help DukeBaby immediately. Preferably somebody who doesn't randomly kill people by giving them bad directions. You'll get bonus points.

Hey all. I plan on paddeling up in my kayak..... so that means I have an extra canoe if anyone wants to put it to use. Maybe for some out of town folks who don't want to lug one on the car.

send me a PM if you are interested.

Dude, Dukebaby, that would be AWESOME if you can make it down for the Scumfoot Derby! You've got my number, just give me a call and I'll make sure you get there.

I can't wait.......water's low, but that area holds so many species and with the number of Roughfishers that will be attending, we will definitely see some fantastic catches. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH, can't wait! ~andy

Well well well... Now that I know WHERE scumfoot is... apparently that is the area I grew up roughfishing. Well, not ON the island...that was always the place the party boats tied up to while I was teaching worms to swim. I'll be there pending some galactic warp in my life

Directions for Duke:

Coming from the South - 35E North to Hwy 110 West(or a right after the clover leaf) then get onto 55(Hiawatha) going towards downtown Mpls then turn right onto 46th(you'll see BK on rightside at the turn) then follow across the bridge then after you cross over make a right down to River Rd then a left to go south until you see Hidden Falls North Entrance and drive all the way down the boat launch is at the bottom.

Coming from the North or NorthEast - 94W to Cretin exit go south on Cretin until you see Ford Parkway then make a right then follow down and exit to the right before crossing over the bridge then make a left onto River Rd then follow that down until you see Hidden Falls North Entrance and drive all the way down the boat launch is at the bottom.

Hope this helps!

Re:Scumfoot Species Derby 3 Months ago
Couple tips here... there is a sandy area on the river right area of the island that will hold 3-4 small boats, and others can either beach on the rocks (canoes and kayaks) or a little offshore as there isn't much current on that side of the island. If there are folks that want to walk up, there are a few areas that are faily easy to reach right below the Ford plant where a boat can hit the shore and shuttle people across. Last thing, is fair warning, going up above the warning signs that are about half way up the island is a No-No. I've seen a number of people getting tickets this year for taking boats up above the no boats signs this year (big orange signs). So, I guess my warning is that you beach the boat on the sand (you'll see it) and then walk around the island to the area you want to fish. The fun about this event is that you can catch anything from that island, and at the top end you'll catch different fish than you will at the bottom. Top species may be 6,7 or even more. I'm really looking forward to the event... is there a time announced??

Re:Scumfoot Species Derby 3 Months ago
Thanks for that post, mightyquinn. All good information that everyone should pay attention to. I would like to add that there are often a ton of annoying drum at this spot. Some nice-size ones are caught occasionally, but fishing a crawler or small minnow on the bottom will get you like 40 drum in no time. Be prepared and bring some different natural baits for other species, some small crankbaits, rapalas or appropriate flies. Also, there are a lot of different water types in this area. Some of my favorite water is a fast, rocky run 4-6 feet deep, which requires good slinky technique to fish with live bait. There's deep dead water too, and everything in between.

For those of you who have not fished this spot, just be aware that it makes you REALLY WANT TO FISH WITH MULTIPLE LINES.

To follow up Mighty Quinn's point: the ticket costs you $50 + 1 day vacation to go court + $78 court fees = $128 + bad mood

And on a Saturday that area will be patrolled. The sheriff is always busting idiots up there. I once saw him stop people from trying to tube below the lock! I was shocked anyone would take children tubing there anyway...

Needless to say, I won't be taking my boat past the signs again.

These are all the species that I have seen caught:
1. Drum
2. Channel cat
3. Sauger
4. smallmouth buff
5. Golden RH
6. Silver RH
7. Shorthead RH
8. Smallmouth Bass
9. Flathead Cat
10. Carp
11. Mooneye

Plus there are other species there that I know of that I have not caught including some carpsuckers and blue suckers. Walleye and Largemouth bass are also possible.

Isn't it against forum rules to call someone an idiot in a post, even if it is yourself!?!

Maybe there should be a bonus prize for the most drum caught? We might as make some fun out of what we know will be inevitable!

Folks, we should move all Scumfoot roundup discussion to the thread in the "roundups" category.

I'm thinking the derby may start at high noon(open for discussion), but I'm sure many people will be there at the crack of dawn. ~andy

Re:Scumfoot Species Derby 3 Months ago
Me and my gal were fihing from shore at the southern tip of Scumfoot last night in the faster water. I was fishing for cats and not having much luck, and the gal was fishing crawlers in the current, when she hooked into a 1.5 - 2 pound sucker. As she brought it in, the fish had a beautiful blue sheen to it. For just a moment I thought that she has caught the elusive blue, but it ended up just being the light from the sun setting, and it was just a white sucker. On another note, a peregrine falcon whacked a warbler out of the air about 10 feet away from me... it was spooked when it saw me and dropped the prey into the water and then couldn't seem to grab it back out of the water. So, I walked over to pull the bird out of the water and put it on land for it to grab after we left, and it literaly took the head off the warbler when it hit it. Absolutely amazing thing to witness. Sorry for the long post, but thought I'd share for any other bird lover out there.
