Scumfoot Species Derby 3 Months, 1 Week ago
OK Guys, Andy and I talked it over the other night.

We think that a species derby should be conducted on Scumfoot island. This year. Anybody can compete. Most species wins.

Unfortunately, we have prior commitments most weekends. Dates and times must be established. I would like it to happen while there is a chance at a Blue Sucker catch.

I would offer a custom fishing rod as a prize, but my lathe motor burned out so I am out of the rodbuilding business for awhile.

I could offer something worthwhile, however, perhaps a rod I built previously or a generous assortment of custom-built spinnerbaits, inline spinners, flies, sinkers, leaders, or jigs.

That's about all I can do. Regardless, I think we should have a meet-up at Scumfoot. Transportation will be provided. It will be a two-hour derby.

If anyone is interested, please post. It would be a good opportunity to meet your fellow roughfishers and to explore the glorious realm of Scumfoot.

Early October would probably be the latest we could do it.

Let us know when you can be at Scumfoot.

NOTE: Scumfoot is the island below the Ford Dam on the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities. It is reached from Hidden Falls Park in St. Paul, or from the mouth of Minnehaha Creek. Unboated passengers can be ferried upstream to the island in less than five minutes. It is an island. It is mostly rock with some trees. If you look at Google Earth, it is obvious.

What weekends would work?

EDIT: I just re-tested my lathe, and it appears to work now. It just needed two days to cool down after I beat the hell out of it building my last rod.

Nameless, Mystical forces are at work.

I have one 4-weight flyrod to build for myself, and two super-heavy maze-wrapped inch-thick super-heavy big game rods to finish.

I could offer one of the Big-Game Shark Rods as a prize.

Cool!!

Early October or the last weekend in Sept would be a good time for me.
Before that is the Peak of the Coho Salmon fishing from shore in Sheboygan.
It will be hard to tear me away from that.

Do you think the Mooneye will be active on the Chip then ???

Perhaps I can kill many birds with one big stone.

I hope there is an entry fee to help cover expenses.

I may try to recruit some new blood for this competition...

Corey,

While we all appreciate it, don't sweat the prize. The get-together itself is reward for me (and I never win these contests anyway).

I can be at scumfoot easily, as I live 5 minutes away. I am booked Sept 20-21 (though it's a soccer tourney in Blaine, so I might be able to make a cameo). The following weekend, there is a chance I may go to Leech Lake on a guided fishing outing (muskies, hopefully). Then at some point in October, I am hoping to head back to Gulf Shores to try for marlin again. And of course, as we get into October, the Brule will be calling. The new 8-wt is dying to duck and chuck.

Other than that, I can be at scumfoot on short notice.

Rich

I could try to make it aug. 23, sept.20th, oct.4th, 18th; but somewheres in there I have to kill a deer with my bow, catfish the St. Croix, and hit up the north shore for some Salmon.

Re:Scumfoot Species Derby 3 Months, 1 Week ago
Wow, I just found this thread......need to talk to my bro more often I guess.......

A Scumfoot Roundup/derby would be awesome! This upcoming weekend is probably too short notice for such an event(I'll probably kayak around there anyway), next weekend we will be on Lake Michigan, weekend after that is Labor Day so that wouldn't work(We'll be logging and piking up north), so...........

Weekend after Labor day?........... Bueller?

After that, bird and bow seasons open in MN and Corey and I become scarce basically until ice-up......damn, it's Autumn already....

Whatever, let's try for the weekend after Labor day. I think that will work for me at least. Anyone else make it that weekend? ~andy

The weekend after Labor Day works for me.

I've never beached a boat at the island...is it sandy or rocky?

Josh, here's a camping option that's about 20-25 minutes from Scumfoot. Or, we could just leave you on the island overnight so you can experience the "wildlife" of the Twin Cities!
