Catching caro 3 Months, 1 Week ago
|
|
|
I went out this weekend with FisheEHunter. Around 6:30 AM the carp got pretty aggressive. However, free lining corn and worms on a spinning rod, I couldn't get the distance I wanted. I don't want to use weight. How can I make the leader tip sink?
Does it make sense to use a flyrod to deliver a light live bait? Would I want to try a nymph hook, or a baithollder? I'm going to try my 9.5 ft 8 wt bamboo rod, which casts very delicately but can reach out a long way.

Flyrod should work - why don't you want to use weight? Even a few tiny split shot, combined with a light spinning rig, would allow you to cast pretty far.

The fly rod is definitely one good method. Or, if you are looking for just a little weight to get the bait down and don't want the bulk of a sinker, try tying in a piece of lead core line...basically works just like a sinking tip. I've used it get corn down to carp before. You can use whatever length you need to add just the right amount of weight. A foot or two adds enough to help with the casting. Plus, it fairly snagless.
If you need some lead core, let me know. I have lots of chunks of it (every time I get a tangle while trolling it basically destroys a 100yd spool). I have lots. :)

Corey
FishEHunter and I tried it last weekend, with good results. There were a lot of active carp further out that we could reach.
Ea had talked to Andy about freelining, and I had read Andy's article on terminal tackle. I'm looking for a very slow sink rate, and free drifting with the current. The area I'm thinking of (Scumfoot, super low water) is shallow and very rocky, with sharp edged rocks, so I don't want the bait to get to the bottom.
Besides, it would be a lot of fun to catch a good sized carp on my big bamboo rod.
