I have heard of these fish before. A prof at UMD kept them and studied their nerve signals in response to sound and vibration.
He actually did a study where he inserted electrodes into the nerves of the lateral line and then put a live minnow if front of the fish. Then he could record exactly what the fish was feeling through its lateral line as its prey approached. He found that toad fish can only detect natural prey that is 3 to 4 inches away. Makes you wonder about the amazing vibrating properties of the latest crank bait...
