Short nose gar, on the fly... in lakes? 1 Year, 7 Months ago
|

I have found massive populations of Short nose gar in some of the mid south reservoirs here in kansas... I have decided that fly fishing these would be most fun, but have yet to try do to, you know, chores, any one know any tactics for fly fishing, and how you keep the hooks sharp enough and how much barb do you use?

LOL...its a crap shoot. Typically if you are gonna hook a shorty with a fly its gotta be in the corner of the mouth or the chin.
There are no hooks that I know of that are sharp enough to penetrate the beak. If you find one let me know.
Circle hook flies perhaps?

We stick 'em with #4 Gamakatsu trebles. But that's spin fishing, not fly. I don't know how it translates into the fly world.
They are much easier to hook than longnose, at least.

I wouldnt try circle hooks with a gar, its been my experience that circle hooks are pretty much ineffective for them... as the line above the hook will typically wind up between some of the teeth farther up the snout, thus not allowing the circle hook to pull out of the corner of the gar's mouth.
