Rather surreal looking, isn't it? Just to see an insect crawling about on the ice is a moment of the double take.
I first saw this when cabin fever got the best of me, I grabbed a flyrod and trudged through the snow and saw Wingless Stones crawling about on the snow. Plenty of tiny Mayflies out that day as well, the ID escaped me as they were quite small.
Hard to believe the little critters can handle the temps, but they sure are active in the winter. Fish do react to them, mostly overlooked species like chubs and shiners here in Indiana.
Anyone know anything about the Wingless Stonefly thing? Winter is the only time I've seen this happen, they just crawl about on the snow. Do they grow wings in winter hatches or is it just a dead end anomaly of sorts?
