Working on the prize rod 1 Year, 11 Months ago

|
So.....the custom rod that Avidfly won for being 2009 Species Contest Champion is finally in the works. First we had issues getting the blank we wanted, then other issues with components. Then, well we just procrastinated. But suddenly Spring is in the air and I took the initiative to get er done. The blank is a Cabelas FE 7'6" 2-pc. medium light spinning rod in a nice emerald green color. It will be matched with a cool acrylic green reel seat and Fuji guides. The handle will be custom lathed to Roughfishing specs and original. Corey will be working his thread magic to create some wicked cool decorative wraps to finish it off.
Here are a few photos of the build so far -

Here is the cork I chose for the handle.

After reaming the cork rings, they were epoxied and put into the handle clamp to set. My hound dog has been helping me out on this rod.

The handle is ready to be turned on the lathe. We built this cork lathe years ago out of simple supplies from Menards and Ax-man surplus. Total cost of the lathe was maybe 30 bucks.

The finished rod handle. I went with a weird and unique shape, and the addition of green and brown burl cork makes this rod an obviously custom build. I took a video of me lathing the handle, and I could put it up if anybody is interested in seeing it.
I haven't built a rod for three years! Forgot how much fun it is too. My end of the bargain is now done, as I wrapped all the guides and the 2nd coat of epoxy is on and turning as I write this. Then it's on to Corey this weekend so he can put the finishing touches on it! I have never attempted a cool decorative wrap, and Corey is an absolute genius at it. Can't wait to see what he comes up with for this already very stylish rod.
Avidfly, you will have your new custom rod for this Spring's fishing! I hope you are prepared for it's awesomeness.

Nice work Andy!
I've got a couple different kinds of burl cork and a stack of cottonwood lying around for whenever I get the time to make the handle for my 7/8 wt. I've got the top 3 sections done, just need to work on the bottom one.
I haven't tried decorative wraps either. I am going to do some epoxy ramps and maybe some inlay work on my next couple builds. Some feather inlays and maybe inlay a nymph (whatever I can find in the nearby stream)

Thanks guys! Fins, a great resource for rodbuilding supplies is http://www.mudhole.com/. Thorne Bros also has pretty much what you need, and they also offer rodbuilding classes.

Andy you got some serious talent! I've always loved the lathe but I really don't have time to actually work on it. Rod looks great and so does the video!

I'll agree, Mudhole has a great selection of stuff. I'm not sure what thorne bros has.
Midwest rod and reel is in the SW metro, he has a small selection in stock but has ordered stuff in for me at great prices (pretty sure he only deals in Batson, a good manufacturer but it keeps things somewhat limited.
I order a lot of http://acidrod.com/. They are the closest place to CO that has a good selection. Not to mention one of the few rod component shops that uses actual shipping prices, rather than the BS some shops pull with shipping.

Truely awesome! I gotta figure out how you guys make rod vises to hold them so tightly and perfectly. I've been meaning to get into it, I just need a little time and money to get started. Thanks for posting.

That's coolness alright!
Really want to build a rod too sometime. So far, all I've done is change a tip ring...
1. Have you considered wearing a dust mask?
2. What's that tune you're listening to in the final minute of the video?
