War Wounds and Battle Scars 1 Month, 1 Week ago
A week or so ago, the Good Doctor posted an interesting pic of a Redhorse that had evidently survived an Osprey attack when it was younger.

I thought it might be a cool idea for a thread if some folks could post some similar photos. Fish that carry marks that tell of some (long ago) altercation that they were lucky to swim away from...

Like this Crucian Carp:

Note the jaw-shaped scar above the anal fin. These poor guys never get big enough that they don't have to worry about being grabbed by some big Pike. Probably one of the reasons they're so extremely shy. Looks like this one got grabbed good. How he got away is anyone's guess.

Goes to show how tough our finned friends can be...

Here's what I believe to be spawning wounds on a Flathead Catfish. We catch quite a few that are pretty beat up like this, especially in the month of May. Notice the chunk of gill flap just hanging there...

That poor Sturgeon must feel so selfconcious about that.
Lamprey looks to be eating his brain, egh!

Notice something off about this Common Carp...

I've caught a lot of fish with weird scars, but this one still has me baffled. I was stalking the flats for carp this spring and happened upon this 4-pound smallmouth bass hanging out in the shallows. Both eyes were exploded out, and the fish was very much alive. If it had been bass season, I would have killed him. ~andy

"Taco flavored doritos and my orange life vest
Dad caught a hundred pound sturgeon on twenty-pound test
Now he fought that fish for 'bout an hour and a half
Darrell'd say "jump ya sons a bitch!" and he grabbed for the gaff
When we got him in the boat he measured six feet long
I was so danged impressed I had to write this song called
Fish on" ~Les Claypool

we had similar things in our lake last spring during the VHS outbreak.

Hundreds of bass and walleye in the shallows like that.

4lb Smallie...that's a nice fish! Man that thing is just messed up looking...wonder what happened? What could have happened? There's no way it could've gotten that big feeding blind, could it?

If anyone can explain this one...

I don't think it's a deformation because it did have scar tissue on the top part of the...well...you know, dorsal fin area.

My wife caught this guy at night, so the pic is pretty much "whited out" by the flash. It was alive and doing well when it was caught.

Who are you to judge a fish by their looks?

Get off the computer and fish!
