My new dog... 2 Months ago
It all started with Jill and I deciding recently that our 1.5 year old black lab mix (adopted from Sandusky County Humane Society) needed a playmate. So I search petfinder and come across the story of a litter of dogs left in a box at the door of a Dog Warden's Office about an hour south of where I live. I ended up doing the drive, only to find out that 4 of the 6 had already been put down. The actual dog I saw on petfinder was there but in terrible shape. It had drainage from its eyes, uncontolled saliva pouring out its mouth, fur matted with crap and bugs in it... needless to say the dog is a mess. I asked the staff about it and they pretty much let me know it was going to be put down. It was already seperated in a tiny kennel on a far wall away from other dogs. I'm not exactly sure what I was thinking knowing the dog already had one foot or in this case, three paws in the grave, but I decided to adopt him. I think the folks there were rather surprised and must have reminded me 5 times there was a no return policy. So I pay $125 and put the dog in my car where he proceeds to pee, crap, puke, and drain all kinds of funk for the 1.5 hour drive to the vet. So the vet looks at him and says "you should drive back and at least ask for a trade"... he practically offered to call them to say they owed me a dog exchange - I honestly think he would have euthanized him for me at cost. I explain that I really want to give this dog an opportunity at life so he goes ahead and admits the dog to the site's animal hospital. I return the following day to receive a $390 bill for IV hydration, IV antibiotics, deworming, and all kinds of other stuff. He has been one expensive mutt but he is making remarkable progress. Only three more days and he will complete all of his medication - after that just like any other pup needing to wait for his next series of shots and his first heartworm pill. He was so sick that he really didn't act like a puppy at all - now he does play, run around, and wagged his tail a few times. He follows the other dog around and seems to enjoy her - still a bit cautious about people - including Jill and I. I'll keep everyone updated on the progress he is making.

Well......exchange a friend or family member.......awful hard to do. It is hard to shell out the money but I am sure the pup will be a great companion for you. My pup cost me a bit in med expenses but is just now finding the joy of fishing.

Good luck and hope the pup gets better. Mine was on meds for the first 4 months we had her. ALL WORTH IT!

They are WELL worth the expense.

We are now teaching our three-year-old Renascense Bulldog about swimming and fishing, he is doing pretty darn good. We have only had him since last July 4 and we didn't get a chance to have him in places to swim or fish.

It is pretty funny though as he has little legs.

Way to make a statement cool water. You remind me of the Dog Whisperer and the animal cops shows. Tempered dogs can be retaught...and no dog deserves to be put down unless it's really messed up. They live in the moment and when you nurse them to health, they're happy.

That's a cool looking pup too. It has to be some sort of husky mix, is it? I really want a dark grey and white siberian husky with blue eyes.

Something like this.

New pups, yay! After much research and holding off, we finally picked up our beautiful great dane on June 14th. He's been great so far. These shots are from the day we got him--he's grown quite a bit already. 38lbs at 11 weeks. I'll bet he's pushing (if not over) 50lbs right now.

Great looking pups everyone! The pound and vet didn't really have any idea what he might be as far as breed... generally most have felt collie - husky mix of some type. Every day seems to be getting a little easier with him and he is starting to be a little bit more 'fun'.

Here is my dog Chu'a. He is a catahoula/lab mix about 8-9 months old. Paid 25$ for him and he is a great dog, great hunter. We've treed 3 raccoons so far and he is a great rabbit hunter. I'm starting to work with him in the water and plan on using him for ducks, geese, and pheasants.

Beautiful pup and very touching story Coolwater. Not enough people are willing to take on saving an animal that's in rough shape or need of medical help. The payback is priceless, and I hope your pup proves to be worth every moment and more. Hope the pup continues to make progress and steps towards a happy, healthy life. Good luck and best wishes.

Always good to hear stories like these. Sets a good example and reminds others that all animals are worth giving a chance.
