Anyone good with Computers?? I am having a problem 6 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I walked into the studio and sat down and my computer was off. It was running about an hour ago.
Odd
I tried to turn it on and nothing at all.

I checked the cords and the power supply cord and nothing.

Then I took the case apart and checked inside.
Still nothing.

Plugged the powersupply in with the cover off and the light on the Motherboard was on.
Tried the on button and it lit up and the fans started to spin for a fraction of a second then nothing?

Any Idea?
I am using my wifes computer at the moment

Thanks
~Josh

try giving it a really good cleaning with it unplugged. I know my wifes computer needs that often or it gets noisy then shuts off.

Your motherboard could be toasted. It's a good idea to check the resistance of the CPU's cooling fan that's attached to the heatsink by lightly pressing your finger down in the center of the fan. If there isn't a fair amount of resistance(for a fan of that size anyhow), the bearings are going out and it's time for a new one. If you ignore it, it won't cool your heatsink off effeciently. If it doesn't do that, your CPU will run warm all the time. Your CPU might not fry before you start damaging the vulnerable capacitor bank that's often found NEAR the cpu. Check the capacitors near the cpu, if they're buldged, cracked or seeping what might look like battery acid, your motherboard is toast.

If you have a spare power supply, try swapping it out. But since your fans are jolting when you hit the power button and your motherboard power light is on, it sounds like your PSU is OK.

About the only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is to make sure the motherboard is seated properly in the case and that the solder joints on the back of the PCB are not making contact with the aluminum casing of your tower's cabinet structure. This will create a short and will cause exactly what you're describing. Doing this too many times is abusing the hell out of your power supply, and most likely motherboard too.

If you DO try to clean it at some point, air cans only ;). Though you can use a dry toothbrush on the CPU heatsink to get the gunk in the cracks out that won't come with an air can/gun.

Yes, I've had all these happen to me. :-)

It sounds like your power management unit. Its a common issue on discount tower computers. Also this issue is indicative of a malicious file that has been downloaded to your computer.

What brand of computer is it?

I'm leaning toward the power supply. I've had a similar issue on one of my systems. I swapped out the power supply and it worked fine. When I opened up the bad PSU there were cooked components inside. But, definitely check to make sure the cpu fan and box fan are not gunked up.

I would start with the easy things first. Here is what I think you should do:

Take out your cpu and reseed it, same with your RAM and video card. Make sure you put them all back in snug and then try and boot it up.

I did actually get it figured out.
I fried out the Motherboard somehow.
Luckily nothing else was damaged so it was a relatively simple fix, only costing about $120

Thank god it wasnt worse.

And thanks all for the advice!
