I just got back from the second wave of sampling for my current project, and I have new fish for my aquarium!
I kept 3 stonerollers and 2 suckermouth minnows. Does anyone have any experience with these fish? I know that in the wild, stonerollers are the ultimate filamentous and diatomaceous algae eaters, they have a thick tough upper lip for scraping it off of rocks, and that both fish are really fond of heavy current. My aquarium doesn't have current apart from the filter, so I'm curious as to how they'll do. Considering they survived a day in a hot car mostly parked near sites in a 5 gallon bucket and were still lively enough to escape my hands and try to escape on the carpet, I think they should make it through the night, but I'm worried about the lack of current.
In a related topic, has anyone built a creek aquarium? I keep tossing the idea around in my head of hooking up a powerful pump to a long, thin, short aquarium and creating enough current in it to simulate a riffle. I'd love to put together a 5 or 10 gallon creek aquarium and stick a darter or two and a few minnows in there. Petco has a "bookshelf" aquarium that is absolutely perfect in size and shape and has a custom hood on it, but I'm just not willing to shell out $50 for it. I might try to build a custom aquarium, I've seen directions for it before, but I'm not sure how to build the hood. Maybe make a really short aquarium with the base size of a normal 10 gallon so that I can buy a hood?
