American Eel (41 ") 4 Months ago
First time poster here. (Thanks to Jknuth for the recommendation)

I love this forum!!! I didn't know a city kid from NYC could find a place on a web community like this! We don't have many weird fish, but some may get mutated from time to time.

I love catching fish- anything and anywhere.

Here is a recent oddball I caught a few weeks ago. I was using live minnows. This fish was caught in a sump which "supposedly only had largemouth bass and bluegill sunfish."

American Eel (NOT a conger, as confirmed by my fish biologist freinds). It measured 41" and was released.

Thanks Corey!

Technically yes. I caught this eel in Stony Brook, Long Island just next to the campus of Stony Brook University where I am a graduate student. Depending on who you ask, some consider Long Island as part of NYC and others do not. =)

I also caught this little guy in there, too. It's great having awesome fishing right next to campus!

Nice eel. Eels are tough to come by here in MN, but possible. What other species do you catch around NYC?

Re:American Eel 4 Months ago
We get a few common coastal species.

Saltwater (striped and black bass, bluefish, flounders, etc.) and freshwater (lm bass, walleye, perches, sunfishes, carp, etc..)

Here are a few pics of some species I've taken (all I took except for the pike and alaskan species):

Congratulations on the great catches! Especially the "little guy". That is a trophy Bluegill! I've seen less than a handful of that size in the last 5 years. Way to go!

That's a serious length of eel!!

Great that you released it, these mysterious creatures are having a tough time.
Also amazing how perfectly it was hooked.

Used to hang a lot by Port Jefferson. I didn't fish too much back then, but I've heard it's great blue territory.

Lots of horseshoe crabs too. Yuck.

Maybe the next roundup should be an east coast eel trip...

Hi ppark. Nice to see another east-ender 'round here. We've got a few species on these middle-northerners hehe! That is a trophy eel! I've never seen one that long.
