7am on Superior.
We fished from the Lester up to Gooseberry and I hooked 2 Steelhead that got off and a 51 footer. The rivers were muddy, icy, and raging. I had to call 911 when a fellow angler lost his footing and was swept out into Gitchi Gummi. Here's the pics and I'll try to post the rescue video, but the camera video isn't that great and I've never posted a video before. We'll see if it works!
The Sucker
NSP which hooked 2 good fish in the fast dirty water. I heavily weighted the shaft to get it to sink.
My 51 footer that came out of the big lake tangled with fishing line and sticks. Glad to get it out of there, but very wierd also.
Here's the video of the rescue. The guy got swept out into the icy waters in full waders and he was struggling to stay afloat. He got sucked out about 200 yards and we saw it happen and were the first to call in a report. He was out there about 15-20 minutes before being pulled out. While waiting for rescue to show up we flagged down a guy with a 14' rowboat and 8 of us lifted it off the trailer and carried it over the rocks and were able to get the guy before the rescuers could. He was an older gentleman and he had severe hypothermia. Stay out of swift current and wear a wading belt whenever possible!
I also learned some secrets about some species migrations up there and when they happen. So it was an eventful day even though no fish were actually landed. But like Musky fishing, Steelhead can be tough and long hours with little success.
