Late Winter Montana Rainbows 1 Year, 11 Months ago
|
|
Winter in Montana is a busy time for me, and this year especially I haven't had many opportunities to get out and fish. Well my old fishing license expired on March 1st, so I finally went and got my new 2010 license. I started thinking that I should really get out and put a notch in it (figuratively speaking). We had a beautiful warm sunny day on Monday, and I got out and fished the Upper Missouri River for some large trout. Well, it looks like the 2010 season is going to be a good one for me. I caught three fish, all over 20" with this pig being the largest and a new personal best rainbow trout on a fly rod for me.

As Rainbow Troot go, that's a badass looking fish (winkysmiley)!
The backdrop isn't too shabby either. Wow.

Awesome man! The Lester and part of the Sucker Rivers opened today on the North Shore of Superior. I may be heading up Monday and your pics fire me up!

I caught this fish on a size 14 flashback gray scud. The stretch of river I was fishing is a short tailwater section which is full of scuds and sowbugs. I figure a gray scud does a decent job imitating both insects. Lots of drifts for very few fish, but the ones that hit were all big...quality not quantity.
Mags...I hope you get fired up and catch some nice fish. Don't forget to show off your pics when you get back.

Hats off to you. the proportions on those fish for their size is fantastic, real deep bodied. any hatches coming off lately.... i'm assuming you have plenty of saw dust sized midges and the ubiquitous bwos just about year round in the tail water sections?

Lots and lots of midges this year, but still no BWOs yet. Soon though. In this tailwater strecth, there is very little surface activity...even year round. It is also much harder to catch a sizeable fish on a dry (unlike our famous freestone rivers), the fish that rise are all usually smaller (to 10"). The river is just so fertile under the surface...tons of scuds, sowbugs, leeches, crawfish, etc.
