Pool 2 Blue Sucker! 1 Year, 11 Months ago
|
|
Caught by a buddy the other day while Walleye/Sauger fishin'! Needless to say I'm very jealous...first one I've ever seen. Fish fell victim to a purple/white Ringworm. Congrats on "the Holy Grail" Tim! Long time lurker/first time poster.

Thats awesome! I have always wondered why no ones catching these fish. Maybe their diets and feeding habits are stranger than we think? I mean you would think one of us would eventually get one on a crawler chunk or something...

The only time I have heard of them being caught is in the spring and late winter when people are jigging for Walleye.
weird fish for sure.

That's freakin' awesome! Congrats!
As for the bait, I've seen all sorts of different suckers on jigs and lures in late winter/early spring. My dad has caught several sturgeon jigging minnows. It seems that this time of year turns more timid species into a more predatory nature. (general observation)

It may be a food source issue that they bite in the early Spring just like the Buffalo fish that will smoke a walleye jig before the algae and weeds come forth in the Springtime.

What a cool catch! To be completely honest, I have my questions about suckers caught on aggressive jigging baits or crankbaits. It's easy to snag a fish in the face and say you caught it. It's tough to gain any insight from that.
HOWEVER - I have heard about it happening from reliable sources just enough to accept that it's a weird freak possibility. Your buddy just caught a very rare and special fish on a freak chance, and I hope he knows how incredibly cool that is! To say I'm jealous is an understatement.
Thanks so much for sharing the photo and story! And quit lurking, we're on to you now.....

OH MY GOD. POOL 2! POOL 2!
I have heard that blues do frequent the end of wing dams just like walleye fishermen. It would make sense that at this time of year there are fewer inverts for them to feed on and in turn they become more aggressive.
So, what else would trigger a blue to bite right now? Purple ring worms... why not deep running crankbaits.... I can see it now, a purple skirted double cowgirl with #8 treble hooks.

Just to make it clear, we were far from jigging aggressively. Basically, just drifting with the current and bottom bouncing. The fish smacked the bait quite hard. I'm going to get down there with some crawlers in the next few days and see if I can replicate Tim's amazing catch on my own. He showed me the top secret spot!

What a beautiful looking fish that is.
Almost a Mauve Sucker.
Our European Barbel are known to sometimes feed on small fishies too. Occasionally they'll attack small deeprunning crankbaits (or little rattlers) with an aggression that puts regular predators to shame. I have never fished such lures in Barbel territory, so I've never been so lucky.
Don't mean to hijack the thread, but check out this article on the biggest Dutch angling site: http://www.totalfishing.nl/salgemeen,9,10637.html
The dude who wrote it is an absolute Asp-Master. He also sometimes deliberately fishes for Barbel with small lures. I wish he was a buddy of mine, so I could copy everything he does!
But I digress. I expect to see the Blues rolling in now from all you dudes!
