Little Gems. when Size doesnt matter. (Trout fishing in Wisconsin) 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I had a fun trip this morning.
I decided to take a trip to my sacred spot for brook trout.
The reason this spot is sacred to me is simple. Its where I caught my first brook trout over 20 years ago.
This stream is not far from my home town and is a slice of heaven, Its in a park with 6 miles of hiking trails through the woods along the stream.
This stream has an atmosphere about it that I cant describe.
Its like you are always being watched and followed, the stream makes noises like its quietly trying to talk to you. Its the type of place I wouldnt be surprised to find a faerie sitting on a toad stool.

This stream has always been put and take like most brook trout water in my area. They stock it every other year with brookies in the 10"-12" range.
Its been years since I fished it.

Anyway I took the hike along the small valley trying little pockets and undercuts. Drifting my line under every build up of floating leaves waiting for the big brookie looking for a meal.

Finally under a small pocket of leaves I had a strike. At first I thought it was a little chub, but then I realized it was a small trout.

A little beautiful brook trout not much bigger then six inches, with long clean perfect fins! A Natural Brookie. A Baby of the stream and proof that they are reproducing naturally.
This was a better trophy then any other trout I could have caught .
My stream is healthy. :D
I got two more out of this pocket and decided to leave them be for the day, and enjoyed a nice hike back.

Perfection!

That stream looks wonderful, and the fact that at least one wild brookie lives there makes it oh so more special. You summed up a lot of Roughfishing ideals here with this post, thanks for sharing.......~andy

Fishing, if I, a fisher, may protest
Of pleasures is the sweet'st, of sports the best,
Of excercises the most excellent,
Of recreations the most innocent.
But now the sport is marred, and wot ye why?
Fishes decrease, and fishers multiply.

What a nice post!

Especially the part about the stream quietly talking to sounds familiar.

Good stuff.

Beautiful photos too.
