Interesting Sunfish

One of my favourite fishing holes is a little polluted creek near my house. It has a water inflow from a nearby canal that leads to some pretty interesting conditions. The hot, murky creek water mixes with the cool, clear canal water in an eerie looking whirlpool packed with scum algae. It is an interesting spot as I have caught a white sucker and a bowfin in the same day there. It has some weird looking sunfish, and I am not sure that I am identifying them properly. The local creel survey only found bluegills and pumpkinseeds, though I no for a fact there are also green sunfish in there. The canal connects to lake ontario, so may have anything in it.

This one looks like a bluegill, but the opercular fla is much too large and doesn't have the black spot on the dorsal fin. Would it be a longear?

There are tons of these. I will catch plenty of them with anything (caught one on a sinker). They look like green sunfish or pumpkinseeds. Would you call them hybrid Green Sunfish x pumpkinseed? Which would be strange because these make up the vast majority of the fish there.

This one I caught a while back. I was told it was a green sunfish x Bluegill, but I m not sure. The hint of yellow on the fins, along with the black belly make it look pretty cool.

Sorry about the links. I played around with the image button for a while, I could not figure it out.

First one is pure bluegill.

First one is pure bluegill.

The second two are probably green-bluegill hybrids. It gets a little messy, since bluegill x green and pumpkinseed x green look very similar. The lack of red ear spot on those two (which are present in both green sunfish and pumpkinseed) leads me to believe they are green x bluegill.

The last is a definite green x bluegill.

Thanks for the help. Any tips on making the images show up on the forum instead of the links?

I put the pics as 600 wide. Make sure you check the width so you don't make the images too large. There is a little icon with a photo when you hover over it it will show image. Click and fill in the spaces provided.

It is all perspective!

Ahh okay

Needed to refresh my browser. I tried that before and it showed up as invalid. Works now
