Mores Creek, ID -- short trip, nice variety

I didn't have much time to fish yesterday so I headed to Mores Creek about 15 miles from my house in Boise. This is one of those waters that is overlooked by everyone en route to the destination trout streams. It is stocked with trout but there are lots of better trout waters in the state.

At this time of year, many of those trout waters are blown out with snowmelt.

I was not after trout and had been meaning to make an effort to explore Mores Creek more carefully. I picked a nice looking pool. The stream was running pretty high and fast, not unusual this early in the season.

I drifted a chunk of nightcrawler. I had to add weight and then in short order I caught a nice northern pikeminnow, a mountain whitefish and two 20+ inch largescale suckers. Then thunderstorms rolled in.

This stream is located right along Highway 21 en route to Idaho City. The stretch I was fishing was downstream of the confluence of Mores Creek and Grimes Creek. The creek follows the road and is easily accessed between the confluence and Robie Creek Road.

There are a number of micro-species in the creek although I have never tried to catch them -- but I plan to make an effort this summer. I have seen reports of mountain suckers and peamouth chubs which I would also like to target. I have caught rainbow trout fishing nymphs and dry flies there in the summer (and pikeminnows will also take flies regularly). I will keep exploring the creek throughout the summer; it's a convenient short trip for me.

This is a good spot to get some Rocky Mountain life listers for those of you from Midwest and East. Let me know and I'd be happy to show you this area or point you in the right direction.

Idaho

All are pretty easy in Idaho, if you know where to go. It's a great state for fishing -- lots of public land and beautiful rivers.

Thats great, man.

I'll be in the two neighboring States east of you in July. Hoping for a largescale sucker. A 3lber would pretty much make the trip.

Chiselmouths

I returned to this spot this weekend and caught a bunch of chiselmouths. They are such cool fish, with a hard bottom lip for scraping algae off rocks. I got into a school of them and it was near non-stop action. Also caught a couple more pikeminnows and a number of big largescale suckers. I need to start carrying a camera with me.

Yeah, you seriously need to start bringing along a camera. I'd love to see some photos of chiselmouth chubsies.

worms

I caught the chiselmouths on small to medium chunks of nightcrawler. They were sitting in a calmer pool of water next to a fast riffle with sandy bottom, and were hitting the worm almost as soon as it hit the water.

Corn

I realized yesterday that they also bite a canned corn on the bottom so aggressively.

That is really neat Matt. Id

That is really neat Matt. Idaho happens to be one area that has a fair number of standard lifers I need. Thanks for all the info and yes, some pics would be awesome.

There are a bunch of different Sculpin species out there. Have you encountered any Sculpins? Sometimes kicking some rocks around or night fishing should reveal them.
