Caught several on Christmas Island (Kiritimati island, republic of Kiribati) in the surge zone of the reef in deeper channels. Up to about 5-6 inches in length. Perhaps the Spotted blenny,Cirripectes fuscoguttatus.
It's either a hawkfish or one of the tiny reef fishes of the grouper family (hamlet most likely). I don't have a book on the fishes of Christmas Island, so you're out of luck. Since you went there, I would recommend you buy this book: Fishes of Christmas Island. Figure out what the fish you caught is, and then submit it as a new species with a proper scientific name.
The Christmas Island you are referring to is in the Indian Ocean. I was fishing on the other Christmas Island (Kiritimati) in the central pacific about 1300 miles south of Hawaii. I'll check fishbase and see if I can find it there. Thanks for trying!
Thanks for the ID spock! I caught a few small groupers there as well that are tough to ID. If you have the time, I'd appreciate your input. I'll add them in the next few days.
